Oahu is perhaps the busiest of the islands. You can get away without having a rental car for the entire trip, but you may want to rent one for the day on some days. Oahu is home to over 1/2 of the golf courses in Hawai'i, and it is home to to Ko'olau, one of the world's toughest golf courses. It hosts many championships each year, and it has an array of nightlife entertainment and the same various activities as the other islands. It's also known for it's surfing
The largest of the islands, the Island of Hawai'i has all the activities of the other islands, a local feel on the eastern side near Hilo where you can find botanical gardens and waterfalls, and a more resort like feel on the western side where Kona and the Kohala Coast are; you will want a rental car to explore this island and the volcanoes; you can spend an entire day at the Hawai'i Volcano National Park, and there are many cultural sites to visit as well. It is also known as the Golf Capital of Hawaii and has some of the world's best sport fishing.
In Maui, you can watch the humpback whales from mid November to mid May, go snorkeling in Molokini, visit the Haleakala volcano, or bike down the volcano. It features lush forests and rugged terrain. Unlike Hilo, you cannot access all of Maui by car, so an Aerial tour is a good option on Maui. Maui also has transportation by Ferry to both Molokai and Lana'i. Together, these three islands, are known as Maui Nui. Maui has a perfect combination of romance and activities available for family vacations.
Known for its natural beauty, it is the oldest of the islands; slow paced and good to get away from busy lives; it has all the activities of the other islands, spas, and attractions but no large population areas. Some attractions are the McBryde Garden, Hanapepe, Wialua River, Waimea Canyon, and Salt Pond Beach and the Kauai Museum.
Lana'i is home to the more upscale wedding venues in Hawai'i. Bill Gates was married on the Island of Lana'i. It is more slow paced than the other islands, with a population of only a few thousand. It is privately owned with only a few paved roads. It was said to have been created by Gods who dropped rocks from the sky to create their gardens, which gave it the nickname "Garden of the Gods." Here, you will find golf courses and other activities, wild life and plants, all at a much slower pace. Pair with Oahu for two completely different experiences of Hawai'i.
Molokai has the highest sea cliffs in the world and the longest continuous running fringing reef. It has no traffic lights or shopping malls. It is known for rural areas the native Hawaiian lifestyle and ancestry. It is the least developed of the islands, but there are still lots of activities to enjoy, such as snorkeling, diving, hiking cycling and many more. If you are interested in the culture and history of Hawai'i, you would fall in love with Molokai
